Good Design Awards: D+I Celebrates 14 Award Wins in 2023

The winners of Australia’s peak international design awards were announced on Friday 8 September at the 2023 Australian Good Design Awards in front of more than 1000 guests from the design and architecture community. Design + Industry (D+I) celebrates winning 14 Awards in this year's program for a range of exciting and diverse products for world-leading organisations and next-generation start-ups. We congratulate our clients and the team on achieving these great outcomes.

The Good Design Awards are the highest honour for design and innovation in the country and reward diverse projects across 11 Design Disciplines covering more than 35 Categories and Subcategories. Each year, the Awards celebrate the best new products and services on the Australian and international market, excellence in architectural design, engineering, fashion, digital and communication design, and reward new and emerging areas of design including design strategy, social impact design, design research and up-and-coming design talent in the next-gen category.

The Australian Good Design Awards is the country’s oldest and most prestigious international awards for design and innovation with a proud history dating back to 1958. The 2023 Awards celebrated 65 Years of Good Design since the founding organisation behind the awards – the Industrial Design Council of Australia (IDCA) was first established.

Australian Good Design Awards 2023: Best in Class Winner - Avatar 2 Dive Mask and Life Support Systems

Avatar 2: Dive Mask + Life Support Systems: Best In Class Award + Gold Award (Product Design)

The Avatar Dive Mask is a cutting-edge, full-face diving mask designed for the underwater actors in Avatar 2: Way of the Water. Combining exceptional visibility, advanced communication, and streamlined safety features, this innovative mask caters to the unique demands of professional film production while enhancing the diving experience. This project represents the collaborative efforts of industry leaders, with Wētā Workshop spearheading the Conceptual Design, Design + Industry managing the Design + Build process, alongside Technical Diving Expert John Garvin, for James Cameron's 2022 feature film.

Comment from the Jury: “The Avatar 2: Dive Mask + Life Support Systems makes strides in both the film and diving industry. Through safety and communication features, the mask keeps users safe while aiding in a more efficient underwater filming experience. The technologically-advanced nature of this mask has contributed to the incredible cinematic experience offered by Avatar 2. The Jury commends the design team for developing a world-class piece of equipment that will set the benchmark for design excellence in this category.”

Australian Good Design Awards 2023: Gold Award - Zeta Surgical - Neurosurgical Navigation System

Zeta Surgical - Neurosurgical Navigation System: Gold Award (Product Design)

Zeta is an innovative surgical navigation system designed for neurosurgical interventions. By utilising computer vision, AI, and real-time tracking, it assists neurosurgeons in accurately operating across any surgical setting, increasing safety and efficacy. This rapidly deployable single-cart system caters to medical professionals in high-pressure environments.

Comment from the Jury: “The Zeta Surgical – Neurosurgical Navigation System is a masterclass in exemplary product design and engineering. The modern, sleek aesthetic with its palette of premium materials perfectly fits into any medical environment. Functionally, it supersedes its competition through streamlining neurosurgical navigation, with its small footprint cart design allowing for rapid deployability in areas that are spatially restricted. It also employs cutting-edge technology and innovation through its RealTrack markerless registration technology and computer vision integration which offers real time tracking and advanced simulations. Overall user experience is enhanced through the use of ergonomic articulating arms for the camera, user-friendly touchscreen and tracker. Zeta is a great reminder how well thought-out product design not only benefits the user and patient, but increases brand value and ultimately generates positive economic returns.”

The styling isn’t the only feature that’s cool, as the HYDRA offers significant improvements in cooling performance compared to competitors. A final benefit is that it can be adapted to existing infrastructure and scaled to make way for future growth of the system.”

HydroTap Arc Plus & Cube Plus is the re-design of the Arc & Cube taps that deliver instant filtered boiling, chilled and sparkling water. The new design includes a number of changes that improve the sparkling water delivery experience, addressing key pain points identified in consumer research.

Comment from the Jury: “An optimised design with a beautiful and sensual form. We commend the design approach that took customer dissatisfaction into account, turning pain-points into innovation inspiration.”
