Inventia Rastrum 3D Bioprinter

2019 Good Design Award of the Year: The Rastrum 3D Bioprinter from Inventia Life Science is a revolutionary 3D bioprinting platform based on drop-on-demand deposition. Driven by the needs of biomedical researchers and tissue engineers, D+I set out to develop a precise, safe and intuitive platform for the 3D printing of living cells. With applications in cell-based research and regenerative medicine, Rastrum has the potential to revolutionise biomedical research.

Inventia Rastrum 3d Bioprinter

A world first.

Rastrum is the world’s first high-throughput 3D bioprinting platform designed for cell biology. It's compact dimensions make it ideal for bench-top use in research laboratories, while it's high throughput, combined with automated printing, gives valuable time back to research staff — making it possible to complete hundreds of experiments per day rather than a handful.

Bringing 3D bioprinting to life

D+I developed an internal chassis of polished stainless steel that provides a sterile, durable and precise foundation into which a 3-axis system of actuators, fluid management system and compressed air system is integrated. The external casing of anodised aluminium and toughened glass, combined with integrated HEPA-filtered air management, provides complete protection for the cells during printing and handling. Using a library of natural and synthetic printable hydrogel bio-inks and custom software-embedded printing protocols, Rastrum is capable of printing 3D cell models that are not possible with manual methods — every printed 'well' is virtually identical. This unprecedented reproducibility creates efficiencies in both imaging and analysis.

“D+I worked seamlessly with Inventia through the entire RASTRUM product development, from proof-of-concept to commercialisation. The success of the RASTRUM platform would not have been achieved without the creativity, talent and hard work of the D+I team. We have worked closely with D+I for over 2 years. We are very pleased with their work and they continue to meet the brief with their original and innovative design solutions. I am confident we will continue to work with them on current and future projects.”
