Cochlear Nucleus Aqua+

D+I collaborated with Cochlear to develop the Cochlear Nucleus Aqua+, an accessory that transforms the Cochlear Nucleus 6 Sound Processor into the only waterproof, behind-the-ear product for the Cochlear implant market.

Brave the elements.

While there are many things you can do with the Nucleus 6 Sound Processor around water, the Aqua+ lets you swim in and under water with confidence because of its increased water resistance rating (IP68). Waterproofing is achieved by encasing the sound processor in a soft, form fitting silicone sleeve which connects to a specialised waterproof coil to seal off the sleeve and complete the protection of the sound processor. This allows prolonged use in water as deep as three metres, in environments such as the ocean, chlorinated pools and bath water.

"The Aqua+ has been a huge commercial success for us, but more importantly, it’s helped bring the gift of sound to our recipients in all environments. Working with the talented team at Design + Industry on the Aqua+ was a great experience. The team quickly got their heads around the brief and were able to provide us with solid design concepts and prototypes we could test with our users.

By also keeping manufacturability as a focus throughout the process, we were able to quickly commercialise the product once a design was selected."
