A documentary of the record dive

James Cameron’s Deepsea Challenge 3D had its red carpet premiere at a VIP screening in Sydney.

As the Australian industrial design team selected to develop the cockpit layout for the Deepsea Challenger’s record dive, we were thrilled to be part of this premiere event. It was a night to celebrate all the people that helped make the record dive a reality.

We sat in awe watching the incredible documentary footage, once again realising the enormity of the project and our role in the collaboration. The project was the most significant undertaking in D+I's history, and one we are extremely proud of. It was highly rewarding working alongside fellow mechanical engineers and specialist manufacturers, oceanographers and scientists, medical specialists, and of course a truly inspiring and adventurous film maker like James Cameron.

The documentary took us on a journey back to when James Cameron had a boyhood dream of a journey to the deepest part of the ocean. The film is the dramatic fulfilment of that dream. It's an account of Cameron's solo dive to the depths of the Mariana Trench — nearly seven miles beneath the ocean's surface — piloting a submersible.

The risks were astounding, we couldn’t help but feel proud of our role in getting James down and safely back to the surface during this record dive.
